Written on the iPad so expect strange autocorrect mistakes.
It's not the first time she's watched someone die, but it's the first time that she's been completely unprepared for it. One minute she's standing next to King talking to Bobby Asher and the next she's helpless to stop the bloom of blood on the crisp white of his shirt.
She doesn't even know how long she stands there by the pool before Deeks shows up, it might be hours for all she knows. He doesn't touch her, just walks up beside her asking her if she's okay. It's like a movie playing a single scene over and over in her head, a million and one ways that she could have saved Asher. Each way ends in someone bloodied or dying.
She looks up at Deeks then, his hands in his pockets, probably on purpose not just out of habit, and she breathes again.
When he tells her to wait at the car, she automatically wants to fight back. She's a seasoned agent, she knows perfectly well how to handle herself and her messes. How dare he try and take care of things for her. She hasn't needed a man to clean up for her before, she certainly doesn't need one -
His eyes are locked on hers and she stops. Not because he's right, but because all she can see in them is how worried he is, and how he can see right through her.
She waits for him in the car, sitting in the passenger seat, giving him the control he needs right now. She rationalizes her motions in that way - she's not doing it for herself, she's doing it for Deeks.
She's staring at the carefully manicured lawns up and down the street when Deeks comes back to the car. He doesn't say anything as he turns the key and drives them downtown. Kensi turns off her comms and watches the houses along the street get smaller, their yards more brown because of the dry winter SoCal has been blessed with this year.
She's trying everything she can not to think about the house she just came from and how close the man they're currently chasing after came to killing her.
As Deeks pulls them up into a spot a few cars back from Callen and Sam, she switches her comms back on.
"Kens, are you good?" She gives Callen the answer he needs to hear, before she glances over at Deeks. He runs his thumb over his fingers but doesn't look back at her, even though she knows he feels her gaze. She can see it in the tense muscles of his jaw, the blond stubble doing nothing to cover the movement of his teeth clenching together.
"I've got the redhead," he says to Callen and Sam, and he gets out of the car and follows the rather attractive looking woman casually down the street.
She slides over the center console into the drivers seat and watches him. She hears that King is still blowing through her legend, and finally she tells him to stall.
Deeks walks behind the redhead's car, and really sells the injury. "How could you not see? Were you on your phone? Were you tweeting?"
She covers her mouth to hide her smile as she watches the exchange. She laughs a little to herself when Deeks claims to be a "newly drafted" soccer player.
When Hetty tells him to take Patricia, which is a fitting name for such a proper Brit, in, she's right there behind to back him up. To protect him in whatever way she can.
Maybe that's why their partnership works.
