The beginning

Title: The Beginning
Author: Becca
Summary: Sometimes the end of things is only a new beginning.
Rating: PG
Pairing: Logan/Rory, Colin/Finn... Finn/Seth Cohen ;)
Author's note: Thanks to Ky. And Fox, for letting me borrow the OC for a while!
Disclaimer: Don't own them. Nope, not at all.

She ignores his phone calls. He knows where she lives. If he'd really wanted to talk to her he could have shown up at her doorstep. If she's being completely honest with herself, she'll admit that he has shown up on occasion, but she's never been in the mood to deal with him. She hasn't exactly been avoiding him, she's just never happened to cross paths with him. That's all.

She does see him sometimes, walking down the hall with Colin or Finn or one of the millions of students he seems to know. She's never outwardly rude to him, but never says anything either. Colin and Finn visit her every Thursday night. They always bring a bottle of something with them too. It's become a tradition for them, get Rory drunk, and she'll tell all.

Except she never does.

She never asks after him. She doesn't have to. She's heard about his conquests, never the same person for more than a few days. She doesn't know what they mean to him, and she doesn't care. He's not hers, he never was. She's finally come to accept that.

They always drink at her place, 7pm, every Thursday. It's been that way for weeks now. Finn supplies the alcohol, Colin - the tunes, and Rory provides the space. Sometimes the three of them sit on the floor around the coffee table playing games, learning as much as they can about each other. Other times they sit on the couch and watch TV, drinking each time Seth Cohen comes on screen and makes some witty comment. Finn likes him best. Neither of the boys particularly cares for Marissa, Colin has taken to calling her frying pan face. She smiles to herself just thinking about it.

"Seth Cohen is my idol," Finn says one night during their TV fest.

"We know, Finn." Even Colin's sarcastic tone has become meaningful to her.

"You tell us every single week. Why is that again?" She chuckles at herself. This time a month ago she wouldn't have been so bold as to ask, for fear that his answer might be… inappropriate.

"Because. Well, just look at him. Look at the hair. And the smirk. And he gets all the ladies. Ah, I know, he reminds me of me!" He looks very impressed with himself as he comes to this conclusion and fills up the three shot glasses on the table. The three of them down the shots together, Rory not even coughing now as the tequila burns down her esophagus. She's obviously been spending too much time with these guys.

"Yes, but Seth Cohen likes the outdoors. And the sunshine. Something you have issues with," Colin responds again.

"You know," she jumps in before the argument can escalate fully. "Seth reminds me of this guy I used to know."

"Ooooo, this sounds promising. Was he a jilted ex-lover of yours? A stalker? Someone who pined for you for years but you wouldn't even look at him?"

"Was it Finn? 'Cause he seems to be fulfilling those criteria right now."

"No," she giggles again. "Dave. A guy my friend Lane dated for a while. Ironically enough, he left Stars Hollow to go to university in Orange County."

"Your friend Lane? The one who's in the band?" Finn's strange obsession with Lane has been the topic of conversation more than once in the last little while. She couldn't exchange life stories with the boys without telling them about Lane, her best friend, confidante and all round ass-kicker extraordinaire.

She only laughs as the Dave wannabe comes back on screen, seizing her attention once more.

They never stay the night, but never leave before morning. But their weekly visits manage to bring a smile to her face. They never talk about Logan. Both of them seem to know that when she's ready she'll be the one to bring him up.

She's not ready.

She smiles curiously as she hears the knock at the door. Her watch reads 6:56. They're never early. She opens the door.

She isn't expecting him.

He walks through the door. Before she can protest, or move to protest, his lips cover hers. She sighs because it's the only thing she can do. She responds to him by opening her mouth for him, tracing his top lip, then his bottom one until he lets her tongue enter, grabbing on to his shirt and holding him as close to her as she can. She feels the hit of sensation again, better than any drug, better than any kind of drunken escapade. She never wants to let him go.

When she finally needs to breath, she pulls away, noticing that he didn't close the door on his way in. She disengages herself from his body and walks towards it.

"Rory, stop." She keeps going though she hears the impatience in his voice. She closes the door and turns back towards him. The look on his face tells her all she needs to know. She hopes that her face tells him as well. She's not going anywhere. She meets him in the middle of the room this time, touching any part of him that she can. She leans into his hand as it drags carefully along her jaw back up to brush her hair behind her ear, then down her throat across her shoulder, down her arm until his fingers lace with her. Still she doesn't say anything to him.

"I know… I know that things can't go back to where they were. I don't want them to."

"You don't want things to go back to no-strings sex? Sorry if I have a hard time believing that." She makes sure that there is no malice in her voice. She doesn't mean it to be harsh for him.

"I'm not saying that I would object to the sex part of things, but…" she sees the struggle on his face. "Maybe… maybe we could try strings for a while. See how it goes."

"Little strings?" She brings her thumb up to rub the lipstick off his lips.

"Little little strings?" He sounds so worried. She knows that he's risking an awful lot on her.

"We can try little strings for now." She pulls his head down to hers again but winces as the door opens.

"I know, we're late, please forgi-" Finn's comment is cut off suddenly. Not one to be fooled by appearances he continues a second later. "It appears, my dear Colin, that we are just in time for the floor show!"

"Goodie," Colin replies. "Will there be a striptease involved? Because if so, maybe Finn and I can sit on the couch for it."

"Yes, if Miss Rory is going to be getting naked, I'd like to have the best view possible…"

"Rory?" She hears Logan's voice, but it seems far away. Farther away than it should be, especially since his lips are not more than a breath away from hers. "Rory?" It's louder now.

"Rory?"

"It wasn't that hard actually, he wanted to do it." And her body stiffens and she returns to reality, snapping out of the daydream. The room is gone. She's sitting on a bench a cup of quickly cooling coffee in her hand. Oops.

The hand, once held so tenderly is now carelessly dropped back down. "He wanted to do it, huh?" He pauses to look her over carefully before speaking again. "It seems I've underestimated you, Ace. I promise, I won't do it again." She watches as his trademark smirk creeps along his face. She feels her cheeks heat under his gaze, and looks away as quickly as possible under the circumstances.

"I must say, I'm impressed. I never would have thought you'd have it in you. Just remember," he moves closer to her so their lips are only a breath away, "you're playing with the big boys now."

She finds she can't do anything at all. Her breaths are shallow, her eyes riveted on his lips watching the smirk morph sinuously into a smile, knowing that all it would take was one little impulse and the torture would cease. One movement and everything would change.

Maybe, just maybe, it would all be worth it. She smiles and decides. She moves then, closing the breath of distance between them to brush her lips lightly over his. It's hardly more than that, the subtlest of touches, and suddenly she has the upper hand again.

"No, Logan, I think it's you who's playing with the big boys now," she whispers into his ear as she stands. "See you at the office." She smiles at him, before walking back in the direction of her dorm.

Hee. I love the Dave shout-out. I operate under the premise that he temporarily moved to the OC, so Summer shouldn't get too attached to Seth. Lane could kick her butt. With drumsticks!

Hee. I love Dave. He was so cool. I operate under that guise too! Lane could totally kick Summer's ass! Dude, that would be awesome! Zach's kinda lacking... DUDE... they're both dating Zach's.... ooooooo, the weirdness just abounds! Cool eh? ;)

DUDE... they're both dating Zach's.... ooooooo, the weirdness just abounds!

Hehe. I did not realize that. Dave/Seth better watch out for Zachs.

*imagines Mama Kim berating Summer*

[identity profile] becca-radcgg.livejournal.com 2005-02-09 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not lame. Don't say that! I was talking to someone about that, and do I decided to sneak it in there... actually originally I wanted to do a CMM reference, but because they were meeting up on Thursdays and not Tuesdays that plan was shot down. Cause that would have been an interesting conversation.

Finn: That Chad Michael Murray sure is something else!
Colin: Yes, Finn, you drool everytime he comes on screen. I know.
Rory: You know, he reminds me of this guy I used to know.
Finn: You knew a guy who looked like Chad? When? Where? Why? How? Who?
Rory: Just a guy I went to school with. *she blushes*
Finn: A guy you went to school with? OR a guy who made out with you in the hallways?
Rory: Oh, he made out in the hall, just never with me.
Colin: Bet he didn't know what he was missing.
Rory: *quietly* Oh, he did.
Finn: WHAT? You kissed a CMM wannabe?

Hee hee hee...

haha thats so funny i luv the humor you put into your writing!

[identity profile] kismeteve.livejournal.com 2005-02-10 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. You so need to write that fic now.

[identity profile] becca-radcgg.livejournal.com 2005-02-09 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. I liked that too. I'd actually written out another ending before this one, which wasn't nearly as good. I'm glad that it turned out the way that it did. *sigh* I'm on a "what if..." kick now. We'll see if I can't do something with the episode that aired yesterday sometime this week. I have to write my paper first though. Schoolwork has to take precidence here! ;) Thanks for the review though! You rock!

[identity profile] spoiledgurl505.livejournal.com 2005-02-10 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
oh thanks you rock too for doing all this writing! yes turn to the temptation of the 'what if' and create another one but sadly yes school work does come first altho i wish i could change that! lol papers stink if its not what i want to write i can never think of things to write until the last minute then im procrastinating and thats definitaly bad! well good luck on that then!

Okay. Wow. I loved this. Like so much. I'll give you a longer review later; I have to go do work now. But I promise --- longer review is coming. You never cease to amaze. <3 I'm gonna add you to my friends list. :)

[identity profile] becca-radcgg.livejournal.com 2005-02-09 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that you were "wowed". You better be giving a longer review than that ;). Consider yourself friended back btw! And I know all about work. I have a short paper due Friday that I haven't started yet. That's what I'm doing today!

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-02-10 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
SO it was all a daydream? Woah, Rory has a very in depth imagination, me likes! ;)

Great end to a great story. Also, the fact that the series now has a title means I can change that folder on my computer from 'that series Becca writes' to 'Alpha and Omega'! ;)

[identity profile] becca-radcgg.livejournal.com 2005-02-10 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I wrote another ending before this one. And it didn't turn out so well. I rewrote using only the first three paragraphs of the original, and the boom... the daydream was born. It's a classic Rebecca move. When I don't know how to end something... make it a dream.

See, now I'm gonna go all author-like on you. The thing I love about this ending as opposed to the other one (aside from the little strings comment cause that's just too cute) is that she's actively choosing to live that life. She's picking to go into the world that her daydream created and is seeing what's gonna happen. In the first chapter it's Logan who ends the chapter dialectically, but in this one Rory is active instead of passive. I was really proud of her actually.

Anyway, I'm glad that you liked it! ;) Have I mentioned that you rock lately, cause you do!

LoL! I like that. At least you have a plan, I just move on and then realise, about a year down the line, that I've left a pile of unfinished fics in my wake!

See, now I'm gonna go all author-like on you.

Hee, by all means do!

in this one Rory is active instead of passive. I was really proud of her actually.

As was I. Loved it! ;)

Anyway, I'm glad that you liked it! ;) Have I mentioned that you rock lately, cause you do!

*blush* Can't imagine why! ;)

Becca,
You rule. Because I've noticed (in my short time reading GG fanfiction) that no one writes smutty stuff. And sometimes you need a little smut. Great story, by the way. I hope you write more. And you are now on my friends list.
xoxo

I totally should have seen that coming (it's Sunday, non-Lent day, I can finally read this)...but I didn't. *jaw drop*

So she chooses...wow, all of it? It's worth it, though. If she knows from the front side how much she's going to give up and then back away from and then how much she gains (yay for Finn and Colin-ness! so so much)...yeah, I like that she chooses. Makes it her move. Good-o, then. It feels like a happily-ever-after.

[identity profile] trubasketcase.livejournal.com 2005-02-17 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
i love the way you ended that. i hate how ppl always make rory so powerless, like she can never have control over a guy. i wish more ppl could write that power struggle. and if this is the begining...i wonder whats gonna happen next...

natasha ;-P

*hangs head in shame* I told you I've come back to review and then I let life get in the way! I should know better! Nothing comes before a good fic! Especially one of yours.

First of all - gotta love anything that has my favourite adorable sidekicks in it. I always enjoy stories where Finn & Colin are close to Rory. I really enjoy her dynamic with them. Second, you definitely threw me for a loop there. You did the whole "And then she woke up"/it was all just a dream/Sliding Doors (the movie) type ending. However, what could have been trite and an easy way out, turned out to be the opposite.

I saw the ending as a throwing down of the gauntlet, so to speak. She's seen what the "other world" has to offer - some good, some bad - but she's seen into the future nonetheless. What I love is that she chooses that path anyway. Except this time, she's seen what could be, and is taking an active role in it. She holds the power.

What I enjoyed most about this series of snippets is that although you've shown Rory & Logan differently than how they are on the show, it wasn't at all OOC. Instead you let them be how I think they would be. Passionate, young, and reckless. Everything a great romance should have!

LOOOOOOOOOOOVE the Seth Cohen/Dave reference. I *heart* him. Very tongue in cheek. I can't decide what I liked more, the reference or the oh so cute strings comment.

Ahhhhh so sad to see this story go. I'll just have to satisfy myself by reading it again. And again. And again...

Again, sorry for the delay in the review...doesn't mean I love it any less!!
